Sweet, sweet little pastry shop – Mon pâtissier

In every French city, there is at least one exceptional pastry chef and one very good baker (bread maker). The exceptional pastry chef (pâtissier) makes his mousses lighter and his chocolate eclairs darker… The pastry shop in France, although it sells croissants, specializes in cakes. Croissants, chocolate bread and other danishes are best made by the “boulanger” who also makes the bread. So, if you may find croissants in a pastry shop, you’ll never find bread there. I find that bread makers make the best apple pies, but that’s about it. In Libourne, our town, between Pomerol and the river Dordogne, the king of pastry is Jean Lopez. But since a picture is worth a thousand words:

      1. Glad we agree on not liking Instagram. The photo of the shop looks a bit instagrammed to me, but maybe that’s just me?

Oh My, that is some wonderful looking delights! We don’t have any good bakers or chefs in our little town, but I might just have to make some eclairs! Mine are pretty darn good, but of course I have never tried one made by a master.

    1. My French Heaven says:

I never tried to make them. It’s too much work, especially when they are ao easy to find around here… I feel very lucky:)

A couple of years ago we were travelling in the remote Northern Territory of Australia near Kakadu, and we came across an amazing patisserie…….a young French patissiere had fallen in love with an Aussie girl while backpacking and had put down roots…..big surprise in that culinary wasteland. We have many excellent patisseries in Melbourne run by French expats. Long may your countrymen continue to travel and fall in love!

    1. My French Heaven says:

What a great comment! What a nice thought! Thank you!!!!

    2. janina says:

I agree! My mother, being European, always found the best of any good restaurants, and food sources such as French patissier, in various suburbs of Melbourne. Unfortunately, most of the patissier have now closed, boo-hoo! So, ladyredspecs, please share your shortlist of the best that are still around in Melbourne, please….I’d like to visit them! Please!!~ 😀

Just the other day I was mourning the loss of family owned local bakeries that were once so prevalent in our city. We have come to value “big box” stores because we believe that somehow they offer savings. In the process, we have lost that wonderfully unique taste that comes from family recipes and cultural diversity. This post is a reminder that local stores continue…

    1. My French Heaven says:

      We are very lucky indeed!

Some may find this statement peculiar if not outrageous, but as a psychologist, I believe that it is essential to have one of these every day, preferably in the late evening with a cup of milk, tea, or decaf, as an “ender”, a psychological signal to the “eating mind” that food consumption is over for the day. I believe that most North Americans suffer from a lack of satisfaction, which they then make up by easting outrageous and gargantuan quantities of crap.

    1. My French Heaven says:

Satisfaction’s the word my friend! :);)

        1. My French Heaven says:

          me too!

    1. My French Heaven says:

Those are Canelés. It’s a specialty here in Bordeaux made almost like crepes but in a mold? Crispy outside and really tender inside…
