In every French city, there is at least one exceptional pastry chef and one very good baker (bread maker). The exceptional pastry chef (pâtissier) makes his mousses lighter and his chocolate eclairs darker… The pastry shop in France, although it sells croissants, specializes in cakes. Croissants, chocolate bread and other danishes are best made by the “boulanger” who also makes the bread. So, if you may find croissants in a pastry shop, you’ll never find bread there. I find that bread makers make the best apple pies, but that’s about it. In Libourne, our town, between Pomerol and the river Dordogne, the king of pastry is Jean Lopez. But since a picture is worth a thousand words:
Oh, how delicious. I’ll have one of each thanks!
😉
I’m in love with those absolutely tiny custard tarts! A teensy mouthful….just enough!
How do you say “drooling” en francais? ❤
“Baver” 🙂 🙂
Yum! If I lived in France, I would probably bake a whole lot less myself!
Good photos as usual (please don’t ‘instagram’ them).
I don’t like instagram. Do they look instagrammed?
Glad we agree on not liking Instagram. The photo of the shop looks a bit instagrammed to me, but maybe that’s just me?
I used another app for that one. I liked the effect…
Don’t mind me, I have the flu so I’m probably not even seeing straight 😉
I just came out of a flu. It was awful! Feel better soon!!
Thanks, and glad you are out of it!
inspiring::)! this weekend my plann is to Make Homemade Croissants..:) hope well…someone here is ..effervescent thinking at::)…but, at the moment i just want to taste some eclaire!
Treat yourself! 🙂
Oh My, that is some wonderful looking delights! We don’t have any good bakers or chefs in our little town, but I might just have to make some eclairs! Mine are pretty darn good, but of course I have never tried one made by a master.
I never tried to make them. It’s too much work, especially when they are ao easy to find around here… I feel very lucky:)
Well, this explains why I am better at pastries than at making breads! 🙂
:);)
Oh, my…those look heavenly!
😉
I’ll take one of each, please!
Take two! 🙂
A couple of years ago we were travelling in the remote Northern Territory of Australia near Kakadu, and we came across an amazing patisserie…….a young French patissiere had fallen in love with an Aussie girl while backpacking and had put down roots…..big surprise in that culinary wasteland. We have many excellent patisseries in Melbourne run by French expats. Long may your countrymen continue to travel and fall in love!
What a great comment! What a nice thought! Thank you!!!!
I agree! My mother, being European, always found the best of any good restaurants, and food sources such as French patissier, in various suburbs of Melbourne. Unfortunately, most of the patissier have now closed, boo-hoo! So, ladyredspecs, please share your shortlist of the best that are still around in Melbourne, please….I’d like to visit them! Please!!~ 😀
Yum!
Just the other day I was mourning the loss of family owned local bakeries that were once so prevalent in our city. We have come to value “big box” stores because we believe that somehow they offer savings. In the process, we have lost that wonderfully unique taste that comes from family recipes and cultural diversity. This post is a reminder that local stores continue…
We are very lucky indeed!
J’en ai l’eau à la bouche…
:);)
WOW! I’m leaving for Libourne first thing tomorrow. 🙂
Hurry up! 🙂
absolutely amazing
I just gained 10 lbs looking at this!
I’m so sorry! :):):)
The words to best describe this? “Oh my god heaven on earth!”
I’m still recovering from that awful stomach flu, but I might indulge tomorrow:)
I’m so sorry to hear this. I’ve been wondering where you have been! I thought you might be celebrating your nephews win! I was going into major withdrawal without your posts!
Some may find this statement peculiar if not outrageous, but as a psychologist, I believe that it is essential to have one of these every day, preferably in the late evening with a cup of milk, tea, or decaf, as an “ender”, a psychological signal to the “eating mind” that food consumption is over for the day. I believe that most North Americans suffer from a lack of satisfaction, which they then make up by easting outrageous and gargantuan quantities of crap.
Satisfaction’s the word my friend! :);)
I like Steve’s thought process!
me too!
Hey, I’ve been doing that for years!~ 😉
Wonderful pics of those gorgeous, calorific cakes. My tummy is crying out for a chocolate eclair. 🙂
Don’t ever let your tummy cry! Indulge:)
😀
Okay, I MUST come visit. I think I just died and went to heaven.
You must indeed! :);)
Oh my word! My tummy is grumbling…
🙂
Tres tres bon! Et c’est vrai 🙂
😉
Wonderful. What are they in pic 7430?
Those are Canelés. It’s a specialty here in Bordeaux made almost like crepes but in a mold? Crispy outside and really tender inside…
Oh my, I live in the wrong country!
I must say that I do enjoy the quality of our pastries:)
I’m drooling over these photos and I don’t even have a sweet tooth!
That’s the reaction I was going for:)
Ah, la patisserie Lopez, le must ….
😉
The eclairs look amazing!
They are the best I’ve ever had:)
I’m on my way. Diet be damned!!!
I’ll keep some for you, but hurry up! 🙂
